I’m a high school Senior named Victoria Plowiec and I got to James B Conant High School. I got introduced to civic mapping from my teacher Ms. Serrano with our Civil Engagement Project. She wanted us to get engaged by helping the world more during class while still volunteering outside of class. She kept us engaged by bringing donuts every time we made the maps, which helped us stay motivated to help out as much as possible.
One of my favorite mapping projects was for women’s empowerment in Cuajimalpa, México City. I was invested in it because it was harder to spot the buildings from the satellite imagery, making it understandable why the Geochicas organization called us to action. I learned that it is important to contribute to the world and give back to it.
Learning that TeenMaptivist exists has been a really interesting experience because it really feels like I’m doing something that will actually help a group of people.
My civic engagement project revolves around the United Nations Sustainable Development goal #9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. This helped me actually see that are cities around the world that need more assistance and better infrastructure to help them
flourish.
In my Ecology class, we've done SDG climate change #13. We calculated the carbon sequestration on our school grounds and mapped the trees online.
